Q. Why has CES Australia site been set up?

Decentralising for resilience
Tim Jenkin, the legendary creator of www.ces.org.za, decided it was time to decentralise the CES trading system. Over 400 groups around the world use the CES, but there is only one server and one team. In order to make the system more resilient Tim decided it was time to set up a new server. Australia seemed like a good place to start because we have so many groups using the CES.

Sharing the knowledge & responsibility
At the moment all CES admin and maintenance falls on Tim. By training up an Australian CES team Tim will have some support, and the system will no longer be reliant on a single programmer. Tim will still be the head honcho, but the Australian team will be able to take care of the basics for Australian groups.

Aiming to work with other systems in the future
CES is currently used by hundreds of groups around the world, but it is not the only software being used by community trading groups. Software such as cForge and Cyclos are being taken up by groups in Europe, South America, and beyond. So Tim has taken this opportunity to restructure the CES to allow for the possibility of connecting up with groups that use different types of software.

Q. Which groups are using CES Australia?

Sydney LETS is the first group to test the new server. When we are sure it's all running smoothly all Australian groups will be invited to move over to the Australian server. Moving to the Australian server is optional, there's no pressure.

Q. Who is maintaining CES Australia?

At the moment CES Australia is being maintained by Tim Jenkin with support from Annette Loudon (SYCE0176). We hope to grow this team later in 2012.
